Greatest Movie Franchises Countdown Part II

Last week, I went over some of the greatest, most grossing, and iconic movie franchises of all time. Here's a recap:

19. Diary of a Wimpy Kid -- $165, 142, 918
18. The Godfather -- $249,175,314
17. Kill Bill -- $331,006,058
16. Final Destination -- $477,080,639
15. Hunger Games -- $636,533,290
14. X Men -- $932,903,335
13. The Matrix -- $1,623,116,618
12. Toy Story -- $1,945,421,813
11. Indiana Jones -- $1,980,610,580

Now that we've gotten last week's numbers out of the way, let's continue the countdown starting at 10. At #10 is the super cool spy flick, Mission Impossible. In the film, Tom Cruise plays Ethan Hunt, a ruthless IMF agent who is framed numerous times over the actions of his spy team, which have recently been replaced in the fourth film. So far these films have raised $2,096,647,856 and has been copied over the past ten years for its iconic ceiling drop scene done by Tom Cruise. This is one of my personal picks and deserves to be in the top ten. Then, at 9 is the vampire-romance series Twilight. In this action filled, romance franchise, Bella Swan (played by scandalous star Kristen Stewart) moves to Forks, Washington and begins a love affair with a 100-year-old vampire who is stuck in a 17 year old body Edward Cullen, (played superbly by teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson). Throughout the franchises course, the two have went through numerous battles with vampire armies and run ins with the vampire authorities. Although the franchise has been under fire with Stewart's recent scandal, the movies have received $2,508,379,328. Twilight is also one of my favorite franchises and is super cool. This number is expected to change after the final film hits theaters in November. Next, at #8, is the sci fi robot movie, Transformers. In this car-transforming movie series, a young adult named Sam acquires a car in which he finds out can shape shift into a huge robot. Sam then finds out about the whole robot race living on earth and its villains. Throughout its three movies, the robots face off against their nemesis, the Decepticons and help Sam save the planet. The franchise has grossed $2,669,760,469 and the last movie was partly shot in Michigan two years ago. This number is also expected to change when the next film comes out. At 7 is the middle age franchise Lord of the Rings. This ensemble franchise is about a mischievous ring that causes destruction on middle earth and a man (played by the one-time actor Elijah Wood) who must travel to Mordor to destroy this powerful ring. This series has grossed $2,913,933,388 and has won 15 Academy Awards over the three years it ran. This number is also scheduled to change once The Hobbit reaches theaters in November. For those of you who can't watch Harry Potter, I definitely recommend this for you. Next at 6 is the one and only best superhero franchise, Spiderman. In this superhero franchise, a college guy (first played by Tobey Maguire and later Andrew Garfield)  fights crime with his spider powers like sticking up the walls and slinging by a web. This franchise has introduced the world to infamous villains like Venom, Doc Octopus and the Green Goblin and has raked in $3,248,471,626. Spiderman happens to be my favorite superhero so you already know how I feel about the movies. Then at #5 is the movie adaptions of the popular DC Universe hero Batman. Since 1942, this franchise has focused on multi-millionaire Bruce Wayne who dresses up as vigilante Batman and goes around fighting villains like The Joker, Dr. Freeze, the Penguin, and Grundy. The caped crusader has been played by George Clooney, Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, and recently, Christian Bale and has raked in $3,701,104,322 at the box office. Lately, the winning Batman series has been Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight franchise. Then at 4 is the swashbuckling series Pirates of the Carribean. This series follows the adventures of pirate captain Jack Sparrow (played tremendously by my favorite actor Johnny Depp) and his crew aboard the Black Pearl. The crew often faces dangers with other pirates like Davvy Jones and recently, Blackbeard. This before-American Revolution-pirate movies made $3,727,735,967 and will be coming out with a final installment in 2013 or 2014. (Sources have not yet confirmed) And now, it's down to the bottom 3. At number three is............. Star Wars. This awesome series is best known for its famous line "Luke, I am your father" which was never spoken in any of the films, and its directing of the last three films first and the first three twenty years later. Star Wars is the story of intergalactic war between earth and the Deathball, lead by iconic villain Darth Vader (voice of James Earl Jones). Then, later on in the films, it is revealed that Darth Vader is the father of Jedi hero Luke Skywalker and that he has a sister. The very iconic space film grossed $4,411,410,761 and has won an Oscar for its special effects. These films have earned the right to be the third best movie franchise in the history of franchises. Then, at 2 is the franchise that has revolutionized the way we look at spies and has been around since the 1960s is "Bond.......James Bond." James Bond is the movie adaptions of Ian Fleming's popular spy books reflecting on his own life. In the films, a British MI6 agent James Bond saves the world numerous times by iconic psychopaths like Goldfinger and Scaramanga. This movie franchise has set the record of having the most movies in it which is at the number of 23 and is known for its broad name of movies like You only live Twice or Die Another Day. Bond has earned $5,074,402,453 in the worldwide box office like all the other franchises and has had six different Bonds during its run. George Lazenby (who only starred as James once), Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton (who only graced the screen twice), Pierce Brosnan, and recent actor Daniel Craig have all played the iconic British spy. However, Pierce Brosnan has been my personal favorite with his movie Die Another Day. But, we'll get into the James Bond era some other time. And now, its the time you've all been waiting for since last week. Number 1 is..................................................................................................Harry Potter. Harrry Potter has been around for years and its movies have lasted for 11 years. In this wizarding tale, a boy (played by star Daniel Radcliffe) goes to Hogwartz to learn to be a wizard and there he learns of the dark wizard he must face when the time comes, Lord Voldemort (played with ease by Ralph Fiennes). Harry also meets lifetime friends Hermoine (the talented Emma Watson) and Ron (played by laid-back actor Rupert Grint). This top selling series has earned $7,706,147,978 and the title of best movie franchise of all time. Only time will tell rather either of these other franchises surpass the total grossing of Harry Potter, and even if they do, Harry will and always will be #1. Here's a recap of this week's top ten:
10. Mission Impossible -- $2,096,647,856
9. Twilight -- $2,508,379,328
8. Transformers -- $2,669,760,469
7. Lord of the Rings -- $2,913,933,388
6. Spiderman -- $3,248,471,626
5. Batman -- $3,701,104,322
4. Pirates of the Carribean -- $3,727,735,967
3. Star Wars -- $4,411,410,761
2. James Bond -- $5,074,402,453
1. Harry Potter -- $7,706,147,978

Now that we've got the top ten movie franchises out of the way, let's look at a little bit of celebrity news. This past weekend, movies like Paranormal Activity 4 and Alex Cross opened at the box office. However, these two did poorly for their expected results. Paranormal 4 opened at number 1, but with the results of $29,003,866. This number is lower than the third installments number and could be boring audiences now with its lame storyline and dull special effects. Then, Alex also didn't do too good. This opened up at number 5 with $11,396,768. I hope the numbers improve by next week because I would love people to come back from the theaters and say Tyler Perry was good at being an action star and help boost his movie reputation. Well, that concludes this week's post and the last of the greatest movie franchise list. As always, send me your comments on things I have or haven't said and I will address it in my next post. Tell me what you thought about the movie countdown. Did your favorite movie franchise make the list? Do you think I should have put the movies in a different order that isn't according to its worldwide gross? Tell me your thoughts. And please ladies and gentlemen, read my online series The Trial at brordon2.blogspot.com. The numbers have gotten even worse after its debut and I really want to get a buzz going on out there about it. Tell your friends, family, and neighbors about it. This is me signing out. Until next time......

  1. Toy Story grossed more than The Godfather and The Matrix?!? I don't watch very many movies but I find that astonishing.
